The Department of Works & Supply commissioned Kramer Ausenco to carry out an engineering & feasibility study for a 200km road link from Madang to Simbai in the Madang Province of PNG. Three route locations were examined and the least cost route estimated to be approximately K15 million (US$21.5 million). This route requires 172km of new construction & 63km of upgrading of existing roads. Three major bridges of 7x35m, 5x35m & 2x35m spans were required. Reconnaissance was conducted by helicopter with some sample ground survey used to establish dominant terrain types. In accordance with the brief, the report showed alternative routes with plans & profiles at 1:10,000 scale on 10m contour maps. Details of geological formations, seismicity, construction materials and terrain patterns were included with flood estimation calculations, bridge crossing profiles, road standards and maintenance requirements. Kramer Ausenco concluded that construction methods involving small contracts of 10 to 20km sections manageable by national contractors would be most suitable. Larger bridges needed to be dealt with by experienced contractors.
