Harris chairs task group to improve construction industry
Kramer Ausenco Fiji Office Manager Shane Harris is chairing the Construction Industry Council (CIC) licensing task group to bring change and improvement to the industry standards in the country.
Mr Harris’s task group is one of nine that have been organised to review and recommend actions to be taken on resolutions proposed by the CIC’s 370 delegates at the council’s conference last June.
At present, there are no licensing requirements for the building trade on small to medium projects, which allows for anyone to build without the proper qualifications and expertise needed.
“The main goal is to develop a process in which a licensing platform can be introduced into Fiji to improve building standards and provide protection from sub-standard materials,” Mr Harris said.
He said the task group consists of government (Construction Implementation Unit), builders, developers, engineers, architects, projects managers, tertiary (Fiji National University), and civil/road construction representatives, and quantity surveyors.

The task group’s first meeting was in Suva on September 26, 2018, to discuss introducing licensing into the building trade.
Mr Harris, who is also the Kramer Ausenco Group Building Services Manager, is representing the Fiji Institute of Engineers on the task group, and his work and that of all other task group members is voluntary.
